About Lakeland Nursery

History

Hand Tinted 1996 Aerial PhotoIn 1981 Al Crist purchased Lauderdale Nursery, near Silver Lake, Indiana, from Kirby Lauderdale and moved from Iowa where he had been working for the Horticulture Department at Iowa State University. Kirby had started the nursery in 1976 and specialized in growing and wholesaling ground cover plants. Al soon began to offer perennials and flowering shrubs as well. Since the mid 1980's, expansion in perennial, flowering shrub, and vine offerings has continued with an emphasis on the new, the rare, and the unusual. Today approximately two-thirds of our sales are from perennials. Variegated and colored foliage plants are especially well represented in the catalog. Ground cover plants sold in flats were de-emphasized over the years and finally dropped from the list in 2004. Over 500 plant varieties are now in the catalog. Anywhere form 30 to 60 new items are added to our list each year and for 2012 we are offering 39 new varieties of perennials and 7 new shrubs.

The search for new or underused garden worthy hardy plants for the upper midwest is both intensive and extremely rewarding. Small specialty growers in the U.S., Canada, and Great Britain have been the source for many of the unique plants we grow. Public gardens and arboreta in the U.S. and Canada have also been a great source for underused species and we’ve returned the favor by supplying some of the finest midwestern public gardens with a range of plants for their plant sales. In particular, we’ve enjoyed long relationships with the Chicago Botanic Garden, the Morton Arboretum, Fernwood in Niles, Michigan, and the Indianapolis Museum of Art.

The Lakeland Nursery Crew
Al Crist has been the owner since 1981. His degrees from Iowa State are in Botany with a Master’s Degree specialty in Plant Ecology with an emphasis on tallgrass prairie. He then soon realized that it's a lot easier to make a living in horticulture than it is in botany. Send e-mail to Al at al@lakelandnursery.com
